We finally left Venice and arrived at Bologna. This pace is everything I would imagine Italy to be. Friendly locals, great food, cars, architecture, and more.
One thing we noticed here are the doors in the buildings.. They are huge and elaborate

On our first day here we stumbled upon a food market. Everything looked amazing, local, and half the price of US.

20120726-082744.jpg
We have also visited some of the largest churches I have ever seen

After that we went to a place where they make a real balsamic vinegar. I had no idea that the one we get at stores is such crap compared to the real thing. It takes at least 12 years to produce.

Today is our last day at Bologna, and I am sad to leave.. But Cinco Terre is next..

This morning we took a nice walk through the English gardens towards Marienplatz

20120715-212855.jpg
On a way we saw some surfers on a river.. Pretty neat

20120715-212941.jpg
The architecture is very interesting.. Much older vs. Odessa or st. Petersburg

Their cakes looked good too.. But we did not try..

20120715-213236.jpg
The plan called for a walking tour, but it started to rain very hard

20120715-213339.jpg

20120715-213358.jpg
So, we took a bus tour instead.. Pictures are not as great from a moving bus

On our way to dinner spotted another nice ride

20120715-214256.jpg

20120715-214307.jpg
And for today’s moment of zen.. Just meditate on this!

20120715-214409.jpg

Yesterday we pretty uneventful aside from a major rain/hail/storm that flooded Odessa. We were just outside the storm zone, so we missed all the fun, aside from a flooded road, which we had to take. 20km ride back took about 1.5 hours.

20120712-082321.jpg
However, we did find Japan on our way home

20120712-082428.jpg
Due to this heavy traffic we missed some of the opera “don Juan”. By the way, the price: $25 per ticket for the 4th row seats. The opera was pretty good, I just wish I could understand what was going on. It was in Italian, with Ukrainian subtitles.
It did feature an interesting character, I wish I could understand

20120712-082823.jpg
Now, if you remember the models from yesterday’s blog, I think I found them

20120712-082911.jpg

20120712-082929.jpg
Later, we met up with our friends for dinner at a kosher restaurant. Good meal overall, unusual serving of gaspaccio, served in an ice bowl

20120712-083050.jpg

For today’s moment of zen, I think I found an Obama poster in Ukraine.

For those not speaking the language it says: tax the luxury, tax the rich: return the country to the people. Vote for communists!

Last night we got into Odessa. The flight was delayed, and by the time we got into a hotel it was late. Our cab driver was much nicer vs. any of the once in St. Petersburg, he would actually talk about the city and even politics a bit, helped us with the bags, etc. cabs are also amazingly cheap.l $5 will take you a long way.
Our hotel is a small place “Koklen”, but very nice

20120711-001100.jpg
As we walked outside first thing I spotted were 2 girls on horses.. Pretty strange for a middle of the city

20120711-001257.jpg
Second thing was this beautiful building

20120711-001332.jpg
We walked around a bit and took some night shots. It’s not the same without the white nights.

20120711-001523.jpg
Today we woke up and went to get tickets for the famous Odessa opera house. Bolshoj ballet was performing “the swan lake”. There was a long line of people going all the way outside

20120711-001744.jpg
Of course, it’s because there is only one cashier mobbed by people

20120711-001837.jpg
We scored some tix, and went on to the beach to meet with our friends who arrived from Moscow.
20120711-002142.jpg
On the way we took this lift, which has not changed in 30 years (according to my wife who used to live here)

20120711-002041.jpg

The public beach was totally insane, with people everywhere, but for just $2/ person you get a nice beach access, and some amenities

20120711-002330.jpg

20120711-002411.jpg

After beach, finally a nice place to eat, called Kampot. Everything is homemade, even sour cream, which, I guess confused Natasha

20120711-002717.jpg

20120711-002745.jpg
There was also a model audition of some sort nearby, which added to the scenery

20120711-002833.jpg

20120711-002850.jpg
Dinner and a show for 5 for $100.. Who can beat that?
Of course, we almost missed the “swan lake”..
Some pics of the theatre

The show itself was great, even though I am not a huge fan of ballet
